Yes. It is finally time to pack up. Today is the day. D-day to hand in our blog URL to the contest coordinators. We have "travelled" a long way to make our campaign successful. We have been through thick and thin, over the mountains and the seas to spread word of orangutan jeopardy. However, our efforts do not stop here. We will still continue selling our merchandise, (actually that which is leftover from our stock before today) because of the good response we've been getting. There are limited things available so please inquire and place your orders through our Facebook page. As for the money we have collected so far and the petitions as well, we would be sending them to WWF.

We would really like to extend our deepest gratitude to our headmistress, teacher advisers, teachers, friends, parents and all our supporters who have been our pillar of strength through out this whole campaign.

As to whether our campaign was effective, you can judge for yourselves by watching the comments by teachers and a class which we have interviewed. The message has definitely gotten across, considering the limited time we had in between lots of exams, for example, PMR trials, second assessment test, PMR, SPM trials and our final exam. You can view their comments in the Art and Videos section of our blog.

Once again, we would like to thank all of you people out there for visiting our blog and supporting us in one way or another in making our campaign a success.

The End..

Okay, so it is not really the end of our campaign yet, in the sense that we have yet to submit our blog url, petition forms and donations to the respective parties. However, we had a minor closing ceremony in school to announce that we will end our campaigning as of today.

To that, Lisa gave a short and sweet speech during the assembly to inform the students and teachers about our ending moment as well as thank all of them who have been supporting us through out the entire campaign.

Frantic efficiency

The campaign continued today when we managed to squeeze in some time between studies to get our things organized. Running a campaign is no joke as we've found out and there was a ton of work to be done.

We had to  :
- make another trip to SK CGL to pass them the things they ordered.
- count the money (again and again and again).
- 'chase after', 'harass' and basically bug people into paying up for their products.
- stack hundreds of shirts into a more or less neat pile.
- count everything and separate all the shirts according to size.
- put up pamphlets in as many classes as possible.
- collect all the petition forms and count all the petitions.

And amazingly, we managed to accomplish all of that in between lessons (I've just realized we probably either move at lighting speed or are super efficient) (yes, I am praising us) (no, I'm not trying to be conceited, it's the TRUTH!)

Anyway, we're all extremely tired and on top of all that, we now need to revise for finals. Thank goodness we're smart people. Yes, now I'm really singing our own praises.

A Campaining We Will Go

Exactly what we did the whole day of Thursday, 7/10/2010. We gave two mini talks in two different primary schools, namely SK Convent Green Lane and SK Bukit Gelugor.

We really have to thank Pn. Mariani, headmistress of SK Convent Green Lane, Pn. Jenny, the Student Affairs Senior Assistant  of SK Convent Green Lane, the teachers of SK CGL who willingly accompanied the students in the hall, Pn. Tan Saw Lean, the head mistress of SK Bukit Gelugor and En. Nazri Bin Abdul Hamid, the Administration Head of SK Bukit Gelugor for allowing us to spread the message in their school about the importance of saving the Orangutans.

We started off the day in SK Convent Green Lane. As it was our sister school, we did not have to "hire" any transportation. We just had to use our trusty "Bus 11" (for those of you who don't understand what that means, look at yourself in a full-length mirror. See anything resembling the number 11? If you still don't get it, it's your two wonderful legs XD)

We arrived at their hall at a quarter to our appointment time to make sure that all the things, such as the LCD projector, PA system and laptop were all running in good condition. The students filled the hall pretty quickly. Our audience for the day were the students from Years 4-6.

The talk got going at 8.45 a.m. sharp with an introduction as to what we were there for, All the members were introduced as well. 3 of our members could not make it as they were unable to attend school due to emergencies. But thank God that we always have friends who are ready to stick by us. We managed to get 2 replacements for our introductory sketch. Thank You Jolene and Kellie!!

As I was saying, we had an introductory sketch to start the ball rolling as to how dire the state of the orangutans are. After the sketch, Rebekah carried on with the talk cum PowerPoint presentation. In her talk, Rebekah told the students all they needed to know about orangutans. For example, the literal meaning of orangutan, their lifestyle habits, their habitat and so on. After which, she highlighted the plight of this endangered species.

We were blown away by their response. Their overwhelming feedback gave us a lot of encouragement throughout the talk. After the talk and PowerPoint presentation, we proceeded to a Question and Answer session. The Question and Answer session was a two-way session. The students were given the chance to ask any question about what they wanted to know about this endangered species. After seeing that their minds were fed enough, we carried on with our turn of asking them questions. Any student who was brave enough to try their luck was to put up their hand at the count of 3.

The teachers who were present in the hall lent us a hand in looking out for the fastest hand which went up first. Those who could answer were given a customized button badge, whereas those who tried but could not get the right answer were given stickers as an encouragement prize. They were so compelled that even our 5 quiz questions were not enough! They actually called for an encore! Unfortunately, we had to move on because we had already made an appointment with SK Bukit Gelugor.

The students were led to visit our mini stall at which we sold our orangutan themed merchandise. Students were also encouraged to sign our petition form and donate generously. After about 15 minutes, our teacher advisor who was with us at that time, Pn. Yon Zanariah, gave the cue to pack up and leave for our next destination.

We split up in to two cars. We would like to thank Mr. Koay for his helpfulness in chauffeuring us to and fro from SK Bukit Gelugor. As soon as we reached, we went to "report" to the headmistress. She was given the official letter stating that we would like to carry out our campaign in her school. We proceeded to the hall where the Year 5 and Year 6 students were waiting for us.

We went through the entire procedure of acting out the sketch, giving the mini talk cum PowerPoint presentation, Q&A session etc. Although their response was not as enthralling, but we knew that our efforts were not in vain. Our message got through all the same.

After carrying out our assignment there, we headed back to, what we call our second abode, to catch many breathers and to count the spoils of our sales.

As a whole, we had an exciting and wonderful time, doing our best to put the message of saving the orangutans across to the younger generation. So that, in the years to come, we WILL definitely see a difference in OUR world that WE live in.

Midday campaigning

Blood, sweat and tears. That's what it's gonna take for us to get this campaign going. Ok, well less of the blood since there's no need for violence but definitely lots of the rest.

Point proven today when we practically sweated our faces off in the blazing afternoon sun. With the temperature well above 35 C, Rebekah and I (Rachel) plodded along Jalan Masjid Negeri to cajole people into supporting our campaign. And so, we set forth at 2.30 p.m. lugging our bag of products, donation tin, petition forms, notebooks and pens, we commenced our journey off to the first of many shops : a plant nursery. Among others, we also managed to visit furniture shops, a dermatologist center and a driving school. Both of us being 'yellow bananas' and not knowing a word of Mandarin prayed hard that whoever we encountered would speak English.Of course, language was a barrier, but it wasn't an insurmountable one. We got by with hand gestures and a rojak combination of local dialect Hokkien, English and Malay.

The important thing is that we managed to get our point across. Throughout the day, we received encouragement and lots of donations ranging from RM 1 to RM 10. Every little bit helps! Also, our key chains sold like hot cakes and many cooed over the 'cuteness' of them. And of course, the price is very attractive (RM 2).

At around 3 pm, we walked back to school and resumed campaigning in Menara Greenview condominium at 4. Thankfully, most of the occupants we met spoke English and they were all glad to help us. At this point, we'd enlisted the help of Ms. Jody Wong to help us carry stuff around. The residents were very happy to listen to us and we did our best to 'enlighten' them on the fact that orangutans are on the brink of extinction. Or in Hokkien as Rebekah so eloquently put it, "Ai Si Liao" meaning (in direct translation) 'Gonna die already'.

All in all, we collected lots of money (cha ching! $) and sold a whole lot of products plus we opened the eyes of society to the plight of orangutans. Repeating all those facts (orangutans will be extinct in the next ten years if we don't DO something now!) and lines (please buy this T - shirt to support our campaign!)  and mantras (this one costs RM 15, that one's RM 2 and the one she's holding comes at RM 2.50),(orangutans are ENDANGERED) about orangutan well - being was loads of fun, not to mention the walking (in the SUN) is guaranteed to help us fit into those Baby - Ts.
